Blue and Gilt 1796 Infantry Officers Sword

A good and completely untouched example of the regulation Infantry officers sword of the Napoleonic Wars.

The 1796 pattern gilt brass hilt with decorated urn pommel and quillion, and faceted knucklebow with good amount of the original fire gilt finish remaining. The fixed shell guard indicating this is likely an earlier example. The silver twistwire grip in excellent condition.

The 31.75 inch single fullered blade, culminating in a spear point. The first third of the blade is engraved with decoration to both sides, featuring floral swags and crowned GR coat of arms. The blade is now a dark brow/plum coloured patina for its entire length. Elements of the original blue and gilt finish are visible beneath the rust and grime.

There is a floral swag visible on the blades spine, and with some gentle cleaning it may also reveal a makers name. There are some edge nicks towards the mid and lower section of the blade, which isn't entirely straight, but pretty good for this pattern.

Some movement between blade and hilt, which would be helped by the addition of a leather washer, the original having largely perished.

A good entry level Napoleonic blue and gilt officers sword, which would improve greatly with some careful cleaning, although it would also display well "as is".
