A good 1796 Heavy Cavalry Officers Dress Sword.

Marked within a cartouche to the scabbard throat "Hamburger, Laceman, King St, Covt Garden, London". Jonas Hamburger is reported at this address in 1811 only, before becoming "Hamburger and Co" from 1812, which allows a good, narrow window for dating this example.

The regulation boatshell guard with double quillions and slender knucklebow with globular urn pommel retaining a reasonable amount or its original gilt finish. The pommel cap unscrews to allow the sword to be easily disassembled. The grip bound with copper wire.

The plain, single fullered blade measuring 29 inches overall, culminating in a spear point. No signs of having been decorated, and with no makers markings visible to the spine. The blade is no longer straight, which is not uncommon for this pattern. Some movement between blade and hilt, and a new leather washer would likely go a long way to solving this issue. The blade has been service sharpened. Light staining and old grease for its entire length, but no signs of serious corrosion, the whole would benefit from a gentle polish.

Complete in its rare and unbroken leather scabbard with polished brass mounts. Good solid condition, with some small areas of loss. It would likely benefit from some good qulaity leather feed, colour and polish.

A good example, well worth some careful TLC to bring it back to a high collectors grade.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched. Please send this at the time of ordering, to prevent unnecessary delay in your order being dispatched.
