1821 Heavy Cavalry Officers Sword Of The 3rd Dragoon Guards

A scarce 1821 Pattern Heavy Cavalry Officers Sword, this example regimentally etched to the 3rd Dragoon Guards.

Regulation 1821 pattern heavy cavalry officers honeysuckle or ladder hilt in good condition. Fully chequered pommel and thumb rest. The shagreen grips are in good condition, with light service wear, and bound with the original silver twistwire binding.

The blade is solid in the hilt, with no movement.

The 34.5 inch, 1845 pattern single fullered blade marked "Hawkes&Co, London. Manufacturers to the Queen" to the ricasso. The proof slug to the other appears to contain a fleur de lys, although it is filled with old grease/gunk which coats the entire blade.

The sword carries the battle honours of the 3rd DG, up to Abyssinia, and the battle of Magdala. The 3rd were the only British cavalry regiment sent to this campaign, and therefore the only one to earn this battle honour.

Above this are the 3rd DG regimental crest with the Prince of Wales feathers. This is bordered by the words "Princ of Wales's Dragoons" Please note the absence of the "E" on the end of "Prince"! I bet somebody got a rollicking for that!

The rest of the blade is well etched with the usual floral etching with crowned VR cypher and the royal coat of arms, The blade has been profesionally service sharpened along the 10/12 inches towards the point. It has a clean and largely bright appearance with good clear etching, and some areas of light staining along both sides of the blade. Serial number to the blades spine.

Housed in its original steel scabbard with twin hanging rings. This in very good condition and the sword fits perfectly. It appears to have been painted or jappaned a long time ago.

Overall a very good, fresh to the market example, of probably the most difficult regimental Heavy cavarly officers sword to find, as they were one of the smallest in the army, subsequently good examples like this seldom come onto the market, so a rare opportunity for the British cavalry sword collector.
