Code: 12113
An extremely fine pre Crimea 1821 Light Cavalry Officers Sword.
This example, circa 1850, was retailed by Anderson and Scmidt. They are recorded at 9 St. James's Street, London between 1850 and 1853. They are described as "Tailors to the Royal Family" in the Post Office London Commercial Directory, so the quality was good enough for Queen Victoria!
The regulation steel 1821 pattern three bar hilt, with stepped pommel and smooth backpiece, with raised thumb rest. This mainly bright, with small areas of staining, and very might corrosion. It would benefit from a gentle clean and polish. The grip bound with shagreen and and copper twistwire in very good order.
The substantial 35.5 inch blade of single fullered 1845 pattern, the early type with elongated ricasso, one housing the proof slug, the other decorated with a floral spray. The retailers marking within a cartouche above the latter, "Anderson and Scmidt, St. James's Street, London".
The blade is also etched with a crowned VR monarchs cypher to both sides of the blade, amongst floral swags and foliate decoration. The spine of the blade is etched with the centre of percussion arrow. Very clean and bright overall, with some very light staining. Two light contact marks/nicks to the back edge of the blade, likely from a backswing.
No movement between blade and hilt.
Housed in its original steel scabbard with twin hanging rings. Good overall condition, no major dings or dents, signs of being carried, as one might expect. Would benefit from a polish, to remove the light staining.
A scarce opportunity, it is not easy to find a pre Crimea light cavalry sword, and certainly not in this condition.
