A good Victorian 1822/45 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword By Wilkinson, dating to 1881.
The guard of 'solid' 1822 pattern, without folding guard. Of typical brass construction in the gothic style, which is in generally good condition, with only minor bumps/bruises.. Crowned VR cypher within a cartouche. Shagreen grip bound with twistwire in good overall condition. The sword is solid in the hilt.
The 33 inch 1845 pattern single fullered blade is marked at the ricasso with Wilkinson's details, and "H.W." proof slug to the other, and serial number to the blades spine.
The blade carries an empty cartouche, which is unusual, these only normally being added as an "extra". Perhaps the order was changed, or cancelled at the last minute.
The blade is also decorated with the standard foliate etching, and crowned VR cypher to both sides of the blade. There is some light staining, but the blade is mostly bright, and the decoration is still clear and legible. The blade has been service sharpened, and carries some edge nicks.
Housed in its original steel scabbard with twin suspension rings.Good overall condition, with sighns of old varnish. It is free from major dings and dents, although it has had an old in service repair at the spine in the lower section.
Overall condition is good, not having been in a collection previously. There is room for improvement, and always a bonus to find a sword with research potential.
Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched. Please send this at the time of ordering, to prevent unnecessary delay in your order being dispatched.
