SOLD

An very good example of an early 1822/45 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword.

This example is marked to the blade "Watts 2. St James, London". Joseph Watts was in business at this address as a military tailor between 1843-57. Given the absence of a proof slug, I beleive this sword dates between circa 1845/1855, so quite possibly carried during the Crimea.

The guard of  1822 pattern, with folding guard. Of typical brass construction in the gothic style, which is in generally good condition, with slight deformation. Crowned VR cypher within a cartouche. Shagreen grip bound with twistwire in good overall condition. The quillion is present, as is the fully functioning, and well sprung inner folding guard. The pommel is stepped, with scallopped back piece.

The heavily curved 1845 pattern blade also features the usual decorative etching, floral swags, and a crowned VR cypher. The blade measures 32.25 inches. Of medium weight, with signs of service sharpening to the lower potion, slight distortion towards the blades point. Some old areas of light staining/pitting, particularly to the blades spine. Blade otherwise bright and in good condition. No movement between the blade and the hilt.

Retained in its original all brass scabbard, with twin hanging rings. This pattern of scabbard was exclusively used by officers of field rank and above.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched. Please send this at the time of ordering, to prevent unnecessary delay in your order being dispatched.
