Code: 12199
A very scarce Officers Chinese Maritime Customs Service Sword.
First founded in 1854, and with a wide range of responsibilities, from customs and excise duty, harbour management and anti smuggling operations along the Chinese coast and the Yangtze River.
This example would likely date to the early Edwardian period, and was retailed by "Pascall Atkey & Son Cowes" a firm of ships chandlers which can still be found on the High Street in Cowes, on the Isle of Wight. The proof slug would indicate that it was produced by Wilkinson Sword, Pall Mall, London.
Based upon the British 1827 Pattern Royal Navy Officers Sword, this example subsitutes the Lions head pommel for that of a Chinese Dragon. The grip of wire bound white ray skin. The hilt has a crowned anchor, and folding guard, without provision for a locking stud. A large proportion of the original gilt wash remaining. No movement between blade and hilt.
The single fullered blade measuring 31.75 inches with makers details and proof slug to the ricasso's. Etched with vacant cartouche, floral and ropework swags, fouled anchor surmounted by a chinese dragon to both sides. Generally bright overall, with some light staining.
Housed in an associated scabbard of the correct pattern, leather with gilded mounts.
Incredibly rare, and the first of its type I have ever owned.
