A good 1827 Pattern Officers Sword of the Huddersfield Rifle Volunteers.
This example without a retailers stamp, but the proof slug indicates manufacture by Pillin of London, circa 1860.
The gothic 1827 pattern guard, smooth back strap with chequered thumb rest, and stepped pommel. The shagreen grip in good condition, with some wear, and retaining its original twistwire binding.
The blade is mostly clean and bright, and well decorated with the "Huddersfield Rifles" , strung bugle, crowned VR, and the standard foliate engraving. It has some small areas of scattered staining and light pitting, mostly towards the point, most of which would likely be improved by a gentle polish. The hilt and blade are solid with no movement.
Housed in its original leather scabbard, unusually having no hanging rings, instead a frog stud, which indicates it is quite an early example. The mounts are of nickel plated brass, traces of which still remain.
