SOLD

Victorian Royal Navy Officers Sword, produced by the Wilkinson Sword Company of London.

The Wilkinson Proof number for this sword shows that it was proved in March 1876.

The sword is in very good condition overall, with all of its ray skin grip remaining, bound with copper twistwire. The pommel and backstrap is formed as lion and retaining a good amount of its original gilt finish. The gothic 1827 pattern guard bears the crowned fouled anchor in a cartouche, and is in excellent condition. The folding guard is intact, complete, and fully functioning with a crisp spring. The hilt retains its original heavy braid sword knot.

The 1845 pattern single fullered blade carries the Wilkinson sword maker details at the ricasso, along with the "HW" proof slug surrounded by interlocking triangles. The blade carries the standard floral etching withing roped border, crowned anchor, royal coat of arms, etc. The blade is generally bright and clean. There is a small amount of staining on both sides of the blade, and towards the spear point.

The sword is housed in its original black leather scabbard with gilt brass mounts. Thetop mount carries a shield containing Wilkinson's details, below the retaining pin for the folding guard. The body of the leather with crackleature and minor loss, but good solid condition overall. This in turn housed in an oils skin foul weather cover.

A very good datable Royal Navy sword which would be hard to improve upon.
