1857 Pattern 1st Middlesex Engineers Officers Sword

Code: 12407

£475.00 Approx $629.14, €558.82

A very good example of the 1857 Pattern Royal Engineers Officers Sword, etched to the 1st Middlesex Engineers.

The sword is in good untouched condition, the hilt of scrolled, 1857 Pattern for officers of the Royal Engineers. This in good condition, free from any deformation, some minor dings and scratches, and retaining good definition to the acanthus leaf decoration. Fully chequered pommel, the backpiece with chequered thumb rest. The grips bound in shagreen and twistwire with some areas of loss and service wear.

No movement between blade and hilt.

The single fullered 1892 pattern blade measures 32.5 inches. Likely one of the last produced, as the Royal Engineers went on to adopt the 1897 Infantry officers pattern, so we can date this circa 1892-97. Obscured makers panel, only "London" is clearly visible from the address. The proof slug appears to be that of Pillin.

The blade has two vacant panels, and is fully etched including the crowned VR cypher, and Royal coat of arms. The single fullered 33 inch blade. The blade is bright, with some areas of  staining. The blade decorated with foliate engraving and the feathered wings and lighting bolts of the Engineers, surmounted by a crown and the words "1st Middlesex Engineers". The would benefit from a gentle clean, to bring out the decoration, which is hard to see in places. The blade does have a bend at the very point, which could be corrected if desired.

Housed in its original steel scabbard with twin hanging rings.
