1827 Pattern Rifle Officers Sword of the 60th Rifles

1827 Pattern Rifle Officers Sword of the 60th Rifles

Code: 11774

SOLD

A very good, untouched 1827 Pattern Rifle Officers Sword, regimentally marked to the 60th Rifles.

I suspect this sword dated from the mid 1850's or early 1860's. It is retailed by "Phillips&Son, Union St" sadly the rest of the address is unclear, and I can find no further information on this maker.

The hilt of gothic 1827 pattern, with strunge bugle cartouche. The backstrap with chequered thumb rest, and stepped domed pommel all have a dark, layer of coloured patina, which would be best removed, although there are elements of the original plated finish still visible. The Shagreen and twistwire bound grip in good condition, with some discolouration towards the edges.

The single fullered 32 inch blade of 1845 pattern has been service sharpened, with makers proof slug to one ricasso., the "Phillips" details to the other.

Along with the regimental designation of "60th Rifls" there is also a strung bugle, crowned VR cypher and the usual foliate engraving. The blade is generally bright with fully legible, clear etching. It has some areas of scattered light staining, and would be improved by a gentle polish. The hilt and blade are solid with no movement.

Housed in its original steel dress scabbard, with twin suspension rings. Similar patination to the hilt, which could be improved.

An excellent, untouched sword, to a desirable unit, well worth giving some TLC to.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
