A Good Balkan Yataghan Sword.
This example looks to date to the late 19th/ early 20th Century.
The hilt consists of distinctive horn grips fixed with iron pins, with flaring elongated side "ears" and decorated brasswork reinforced with leather at the bolster.
The downwards curving blade is 24 inches long, marked with conentric etched decoration, and a further panel, possibly containing a date. The blade is generally bright with light staining. Some pitting and deformation at the blades point.
Housed in its original scabbard of hammered brass covered wood, with leather strap and a velvet cover. The chape now absent with the blades point protruding.
Total length n scabbard 29.5 inches.
