A very handsome Georgian Scottish Dirk.
This attractive gilt brass mounted example is of officers quality, and is in very good, untouched condition.
Well carved bog oak grip decorated with a celtic basket weave pattern, embellished with brass studs. The pommel of an unusual domed design, with a ropework border, with a similar design replicated on the knife and fork.
The attractive, plain blade, with a length of 12 inches (not including under the collar) has a scallopped spine, with a long central fuller, and a double spine fuller, which has been decorated with pierced holes, a features I've not encountered on a Scots dirk previously. It still holds a good edge, and culminates in a needle point.
The scabbard is of leather covered wood with matching, gilt brass, shaped mounts, with matching thistle decoration. Twin suspension loops to the rear. The scabbard houses a knife and fork, both silver mounted and decorated as the dirk itself. The knife also has a scalloped spine, the fork with twin tines.
Condition is generally very good, with some minor staining to all three blades. the scabbard leater has wear as one would expect, along with the odd ding/dent, but nothing serious. The domed pommel on the accompanying knife is now more concave, likely from drumming when at table.
Overall length 19 inches in scabbard.
An very attractive, and scarce original example of this iconic Scottish knife.
