An interesting, and unusual George V Horn Hilted Mameluke.
This example of steel with a heavy nickel plating to hilt and scabbard. Possibly for Police or colonial use.
The steel hilt, with slab green horn grip scales, fixed with rosettes. The crossguard and knot loop are also of steel, and terminating with ball finials. Even wear to the plating, with some gap/shrinkage where the horn meets the central cross guard, and two small but stable cracks to the horn grip at the pommel, one caused where the pommel has recieved a blow, causing a small chip.
The curved. unfullered, single-edged blade measuring 32.25 inches, culminating in a spear point.
Retailer marked at the ricasso "J.B. Johnstone & Co, London&Dublin" a Military Tailor in both London and Dublin from the mid 19thC. The proof disk is marked "P" likely for Pillin.
The blade slightly dull, but well decorated with good clear floral etching, vacant panels, and crowned GV Royal Cypher. Some small areas of dark staining, and would greatly improve with a gentle clean and polish.
A small amount of movement between the blade and the crossguard, which it may be possible to correct with a new leather washer, the original having shrunk.
Housed in its original plated steel dress scabbard with twin hanging rings. Good overall condition, a noticeable thumb print shape dent at one side of the drag.
An unusual and attractive sword.
