A Victorian Black Watch Officers Broadsword.
The hilt is an 1828 pattern steel crossguard of Black Watch pattern, with cruxiform pommel, which can be removed for addition of the full basket hilt. Good overall condition, with some pitting to the pommel. The shagreen grip bound with silver twistwire, and in good condition, with some minor loss and service wear.
The 33 inch double fullered broadsword blade, retailed by Samuel Gardner, with his details to the ricasso, below the royal coat of arms, carries a "P" proof slug, likely indicating the blade was produced by Pillin. The blade, with vacant cartouche, is decorated with the emblems of Scotland, thistles, and foliage. The Regimental badge of the Black Watch, Royal Highlanders, the Sphinx and battle honour "Egypt". Some light staining, but generally bright, with wear at the ricasso's.
Housed in its scarce all steel scabbard, made to resemble the steel mounted leather field service scabbard. This would indicate the officer wanted a more sturdy campaign scabbard, and had this specially made. It likely had a leather or painted finish originally, so that it wouldn't look out of place.
A rare survival, which is in very good condition overall, with some minor scuffs/dents.
A very interesting Victorian example of an officers fighting sword.
