SOLD

A scarce WW1 period 1827 pattern Officers sword of the Royal Navy Volunteers. Examples of this pattern are known to have been carried by members of the Royal Naval Division during WW1.

This example has a bright, 31.5 inch etched blade, displaying the Royal Coat of Arms, the crowned fouled anchor, "RNV",  acorns, and the usual floral swags with roped border. It is in good shape. with clear, good quality etching with some small areas of staining, but no serious corrosion. It has been service sharpened, which again would point to early service with an officer of the RND.

The blade bears no retailers marking at the ricasso, and the other displays a proof slug with fleur de lys. This may be a late Charles Reeves Ltd mark, which were a subsidiary of Wilkinson Sword. The spine carries a four digit serial number.

The 1827 pattern Royal Naval Officers hilt is well executed with attractive lions head pommel. The crowned fouled anchor cartouche overlaid with the initials "RNV".

The white ray skin grip is all complete, as is the twistwire binding. The hilt retains it's folding guard, which retains a good level of its "snap". When folded with scabbard mounted, it locks the sword into the scabbard. The sword retains its original and correct sword knot, which is also in pleasing condition.

The scabbard is the regulation black leather with gilt mounted brass mounts. It is in very good, solid condition.

All in all a good honest example, fresh to the market, which has survived well, which lends to its scarcity.
