The sword of Major General Henry Tod Stuart (1827-1910)

He obtained his commission in the East India Company in December 1849, and was posted to the Madras Army. He was promoted to Lieutenant in August 1852, whilst serving in the second Burmese War, being present at the capture of Pegu, and being awarded medal and clasp.

He was promoted to Captain in December 1862, Major in December 1869 and Lieutenant Colonel December 1875. He served with the 6th Madras Native Infantry, and as second in command of the 40th Madras Native Infantry until his retirment in July 1882 when he was advanced to the honoary rank of Major General.

The sword itself, a scarce pre numbered 1822 pattern Infantry officers sword by Wilkinson, likely dates to his first commission with the EIC. Fourtunately it carries his name in a scrolled banner "Henry Tod Stuart" etched to the blade, allowing a positive attribution.

The gothic brass guard in good condition and solid, with no falling guard. Crowned VR cartouche. A rayskin grip, with twistwire binding. No serious deformation. The whole is well polished, as one might expect from a sword service carried and used for a number of years. Some movement in the backstrap at the hilt, mentioned for accuracy.

The curved, single fullered, 1845 pattern blade, measuring 31.5 inches. Wilkinson makers details and H.W. proof slug to the elongated ricasso. Named banner, floral decoration, and crowned VR cypher, all worn but legible. The blade well polished, and largely bright with some old areas of light staining/pitting, and with signs of previous service sharpening, and some edge nicks.

Housed in its brass dress scabbard for officers of field rank and above.

A scarce pre numbered Wilkinson, to a know owner, with scope for further research.
