A good Great War period Grenadier Guards Officers Sword with An Irish Guards Blade.
This example produced by Wilkinson Sword and can be dated to mid 1918 via the proof number to the blades spine. It carries Wilkinson's hexagonal "best proof" slug, so an expensive and high quality sword in its day.
The gothic 1854 pattern Guards hilt, bearing the regimental badge of the Grenadier Guards. Shagreen grip is complete and in good condition, complete with silver twistwire binding. There is now loss to the plating to the hilt, particuarly towards the pommel.
The 32 inch blade is without battle honours, the banners being vacant, which would be correct for a WW1 period example. It features the Irish Guards regimental shamrock badge the crowned GVR cypher. The blade is generally worn, the etching faint in places, it has obviously been well polished and is quite bright in appearance with some staining, and areas of old pitting.
Serial number to the blades spine.
Housed in is original steel dress scabbard which is in good solid condition, although with a loss of plating, similar to the hilt.
An interesting sword, to two sought after guards regiments. One can only surmise the orignal owner started off in the Irish Guards, before transfering to the Grenadiers.
