Code: 12228
A very clean untouched and attributable Edward VII 1897 pattern Royal Engineers Officers Sword.
This example was produced by "Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London." and was completed on the 27th of September, 1910 for an O. Slater, Royal Engineers. Lieutenant Owen Slater served with the Royal Engineers during WW1, and was mentioned in General Sir John Nixon's dispatch on Operation in Amara during the 31st of May to the 4th of June 1915, featuered in the London Gazette on the 5th of April 1916.
Further research of Lieutenant Slater's career is needed. I will supply an digital image of him in uniform, to the new owner.
The regulation 1897 pattern hilt with crowned ER VII cypher. Domed pommel and fully chequered backpiece, ray skin, rather than shagreen grip. Some minor loss and service wear, and bound with twistwire. Some wear to the plated finish, particuarly to the interior of the guard.
The single fullered 32.5 inch blade of 1892 pattern, with Wilkinson's details to one ricasso, and proof slug to the other. The blade carries the serial number to the spine.
The plated blade is in very good, bright condition, and fully etched with one panel bearing the original owners initials "O.S.", along with the feathered lighting bolts and "Royal Engineers", alongside the standard floral engraving, royal coat of arms, and crowned ERVII cypher. The etching is quite faint, although entirely legible. It remains bright in appearance, with some small patches of very light staining, generally good untouched condition overall.
Housed in its original Sam Brown field service leather scabbard. The scabbard in good condition, with some minor scuff/marks, possibly with an old repair to the centre. It would benefit from a feed/polish.
The sword will be accompanied by a digital proof ledger page for this sword showing Slater as the original purchaser. Lots of room for further research into the original owner.
