A good Great War period, George V 1897 Pattern Infantry officers sword.
The sword in generally good condition, typical of the standard 1897 officers sword produced by the Sheffield cutlery trade during WW1.
The regulation 1897 pattern hilt with George V crowned royal cypher. The steel hilt now dull, but which should respond very well to a gentle polish. Good shagreen grips, bound with twistwire, free from loss, but some old drops white emulsion paint which should be gently removed. Domed pommel and fully chequered backstrap. Fitted with its original sword knot, which is a little the worse for wear, but entirely original.
No makers marking to the ricasso. Etched decoration which is quite faint, a typical indication of wartime manufacture, but all lelgible, including the GV crowned Royal cypher. Some staining and old rust to the single fullered 32.5 inch blade, which could be improved with a gentle clean and polish. The sword has been service sharpend from around halfway down the blade to the point, another indication of WW1 service use.
Housed in its field service leather scabbard in very good condition, with some minor scuffs.
The original carrying bag accompanying the sword has the initials "C.W.J-S." which may open up an avenue for research into its original owner. The bag itself now very worn, and would benefit from some leather feed and polish.
A good untouched sword, which should tidy up nicely.
