An Indian Army 1895 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword By Manton

An Indian Army 1895 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword By Manton

Code: 10176

SOLD

A very interesting 1895 pattern Infantry sword produced by Manton&Co, Calcutta and Delhi.

In recent years the name Manton has been found on large quantities of reproduction swords, but this example is the real thing, and the only one of this format which I have ever encountered.

The blade carries a deep etch which reads "Made and Proved in India"

The hilt caries the correct VRI cypher surmounted by the Imperial crown, and appears to have been plated with nickel silver. The perfect fish skin grip is finished with strands of silver twistwire.

The blade is 32 inches long and carries "No 112" underneath the makers mark at the ricasso.

The scabbard appears to have been repaired, having a new brass drag and chape fitted during its working life, but this is a perfect fit, as many Indian Army weapons carry brass fittings.
