An early 1822/45 pattern Infantry officers, marked to the Royal Artillery.

The gothic brass guard in good condition of solid type, made without falling guard. Crowned VR cartouche. Light service wear to the shagreen grip, bound with copper twistwire binding. No serious deformation, and retaining a rich brass colour. Some movement between blade and hilt, likely due to the original washer now largely having perished.

The curved, single fullered, 1845 pattern blade, measuring 32 inches. Plain, elongated ricasso, with no proof slug. Makers details for "Hamburger, Rogers&Co, 30 King St, Covent Garden, London within a cartouche further up the blade. Hamburger used the "&Co" at this address from 1839 until 1862, and I would place this sword pre 1850.

The blade with standard floral decoration, and crowned VR cypher. It has the feathered lighting bolts, surmounted by "Royal Artillery".

Artillery officer's carried the Infantry pattern until the mid 1840's.

The blade now quite dull, and would benefit from a gentle polish, to brigten it and remove some of the staining. Good untouched conditon overall, with areas of light staining/pitting, and with signs of previous service sharpening, and some edge nicks.

Housed in its original steel scabbard with twin hanging rings, in good overall condition, even patina, with signs of old, plated finish. It has a minor crease, with two small spilts at either end.

An unusual Crimean period sword, worthy of further research.
