A completely untouched Victorian Royal Navy Midshipman's dirk.
This one is in need of some gentle cleaning to bring it back for its rather forlorn current state, but it has very good bones, and should respond well!
Underneath the verdigris on the locket I can make out the original owners initials "L.S.S."
I have attributed this dirk to Logan Sutherland Stansfield (29 March 1859 – 28 March 1936)
I beleive he rose through the ranks reaching the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy seeing service during the Boer War and WW1. Much more research needed. I did find an image of him available to view on the National Portrait Gallery Website, which you can view HERE.
Worthy of a good clean, and further research, one to keep you occupied for a while!
