Code: 12464
A good WW1 Scottish Officers Broadsword attributed to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
The hilt is an 1828 pattern steel crossguard with ball finials , with domed cruxiform pommel, which can be removed for addition of the full basket hilt. Good overall condition, with loss to the finish of the nut. The shagreen grip bound with copper twistwire, and in very good condition.
The blade, with Wilkinson's details to the ricasso, along with thier "best quality" hexagonal proof slug. Two vacant cartouches and further decorated with the emblems of Scotland, thistles, and foliage and the Cypher of King George V. Some light staining, and pitting at the point but generally bright.
Housed in its brown leather field service leather scabbard with steel mounts, which is in good condition, with some minor scuffs. Wear to the lower ball finial.
Although not regimentally marked, the Wilkinson proof ledger shows that this sword was purchased by Lieutenant H.C. Davies of the 1/6th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Herbert Clement-Davies MIC shows entry to France and Flanders on the October 1918, so with luck he survived the war and made it home. Worthy of further research.
