A very good George V Army Service Corps regimental pattern officers sword, By WIlkinson.
The three bar hilt of regulation 1821 pattern, with chequered pommel and back strap. The grip of shagreen bound with original copper twistwire, all complete and in very good condition. The hilt retains its original brown leather sword knot. There is some loss to the original plated finish, most noticeably around the blades washer, and the ferrule of the grip. I beleive it could be polished to reduce the effect.
The 35 inch single blade of polished steel. It carries Wilkinson's makers details at one ricasso, and thier "best proof" hexagonal proof slug to the other. Thier individual five digit serial number to the blades spine, indicates production in 1914.
The blade is bright and retains crisp etching. One vacant panel, the other containing the original owners name "M. Grieg". Further etched with the crowned GV monarchs cypher, and the usual foliate engravings. Interestingly the blade has been professionally service sharpened, which would be correct for an officer serving at the beginning of the Great War.
I have found details for a Lieutenant Maurice Grieg, who served with the Army Service Corps. I beleive his service records are available at the National archives, which would open up an avenue for further research.
Housed in its original brown leather field service scabbard, which is in excellent condition, with only minor scuffs.
Overall a very good example of a surprisingly hard to find sword.
