A very fine 1897 Pattern Royal Engineers Officers Sword.
The sword of Reginald Henry Phillimore CIE, DSO (1879-1964)
Colonel Reginald Phillimore was Surveyor General in India and author of the Historical Records of the Survey of India (five vols., 1945-1968). Born in Ireland, his father was Admiral Henry Bourchier Phillimore. During WW1 he was awarded the DSO, and mentioned in despatches four times. After his career in the Royal Engineers and Survey of India, Phillimore authored several articles on early surveying and map-making in India. He died in India in 1964.

This example produced by Wilkinson Sword, Pall Mall, London. The blades serial number dating the sword to 1898, making it an early example of the 1897 pattern. Victorian examples are relatively scarce, only being produced for four years, until Queen Victoria's death in January 1901.
The regulation 1897 pattern hilt with crowned VR cypher, fully chequered backpiece, and domed pommel. The shagreen grip free from loss although it does carry light service wear, and bound with silver twistwire.
The single fullered 32.5 inch blade of 1892 pattern, with Wilkinson's details to one ricasso, and proof slug to the other, and serial number to the spine.
The blade is fully etched with one panel bearing the original owners name, alongside the standard floral engraving, royal coat of arms, and crowned VR cypher. It remains bright in appearance, with some patches of light rust and staining towards the tip.
The brown leather field service scabbard in good sound condition, the retaining strap now absent.
