A good Boer War period Royal Artillery Officers Sword.

This example retailed by Thomas McBride & Sons, a Military Tailor working at 17 Charles Street, St James. This allows the sword to be dated to 1890-1910.

The sword has the regulation 1821 pattern three bar hilt, stepped pommel and chequered backpiece. The grip of shagreen grip bound in twistwire which is complete and in good overall condition, with service wear and some discolouration.

The 33.5 inch single fullered 1845 pattern blade in generally good clean condition. It has been service sharpened, and carries several edge knocks. It bears McBride's details to one ricasso, with proof slug surmounted by interlocking triangles to the other. It has a serial number to the spine.

The blade is further decorated with floral etching, and a field gun, and feathered lightning bolts. Unusually it does not display the royal arms, or Queen Victoria's "VR" cypher.

The blade is bright overall but does have some areas of light pitting and staining, which is most noticeable towards the blades point.

The spine also carries the "Centre of Percussion" marking.

The grip and hilt solid with no movement.

Housed in its original Sam Brown Field Service scabbard, which has a reinforced drag and a side loop, the latter being quite an unusual feature. Some scuffing to the leather, but a pleasing and solid scabbard which, along with the lack of VR cypher may indicate Indian service.

Good untouched condition, and the whole could be cleaned and polished if desired.
