An good, pre Crimea 1821 Light Cavalry Officers Sword.
This example, circa 1850, was retailed by Colley&Cuff. They were the last incarnation of an older business, recorded at 18 Cockspur Street, London. They were only in partnership in 1850 and thier business association was desolved on the 31st of December 1850. Colley & Cuff were saddlers to Her Majesty and the Queen's Own Regiment of Worcestershire Yeomanry Cavalry, so the quality was good enough for Queen Victoria!
The regulation steel 1821 pattern three bar hilt, with stepped pommel and smooth backpiece, with raised thumb rest. The grip bound with shagreen and and copper twistwire in very good order.
The substantial blade measuring just under 35.25 inch is of single fullered 1845 pattern, the early type with elongated ricasso. one housing the proof marking, although there is no provision for a slug, and the other with the retailers marking.
The blade is etched with a crowned VR monarchs cypher to both sides of the blade, amongst floral swags and foliate decoration. Very clean and bright overall, with some very light staining. Two noticable contact marks/nicks to the edge of the blade.
No movement between blade and hilt.
Housed in its original steel scabbard with twin hanging rings. Good overall condition, no major dings or dents, or splits. Salt and pepper pitting scattered along its length, as is the blades ferrule, for some inexplicable reason!
A scarce opportunity to own a good pre Crimea light cavalry sword, in above average condition.
