A rather tired, but scarce 1821 Pattern Light Cavalry Officers Sword of the Buckinghamshire Yeomanry.
This officers sword, with regulation three bar hilt and fully chequered backstrap and pommel. which help date the sword to post 1895. Sadly the swords original grip binding is now absent, leaving the dark stained wooden grip.
The blade is marked at the the ricasso for Henry Guterbock&Sons, who were in business in various addresses in New burlington Street from 1891 until 1900. They were a military tailor and outfitter. This allows us to further narrow the possible date to a five year period betweem 1895 and 1900.
The proof slug would indicate that it was manufactured by S.J. Pillin.
This dating window would help identify the original owner, whos overlaid initials are also etched on the blade, along with the crowned "Bucks Yeomanry" and various other engraving. The blade has suffered from being exposed to the elements, and has areas of scattered pitting, and dark staining for its length on both sides. The point has been reprofiled, and the blade service sharpened, The blade length is now 34 inches.
The blade remains solid in the hilt, with no movement.
No scabbard.
A good sword to a very desirable unit with the opportunity for research into the original owner. I wouldn't be suprised if this sword had seen active service during the Boer War, which would go some way to explain its rather worn condition.
