A good Edward VIII 1897 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword, By WIlkinson.

I was told this sword was produced for a Lt Jupp of the Welch Regiment. A John George Leonard Jupp was indeed comissioned into the Welch Regiment in August 1937. However, I do not have the proof ledger sword for this sword, so it is sold as unattributed.

The regulation 1897 pattern guard guard with distinctive crowned ERVIII cypher, with domed pommel and fully chequered backpiece. The shagreen grip is complete, and retaining the twistwire binding. The plated finish now rather bubbled in appearance, and almost entirely missing from the interior of the guard. The pommel nut carries vice marks, as though somebody attempted to take it apart, but were obviously unsuccessful, as the peen remains intact.

The 1892 pattern single fullered blade length with a length of 32.5 inches. It is arked at the ricasso "Wilkinson Sword Co Ltd London", and with thier Hexagonal "Best proof" slug with "HW" to the other. It carries thier serial number to the spine, dating this example to 1936, along with "Made in England".

This example with vacant inscription panels.  Alongside the crowned ERVIII cypher, the blade is well etched with foliate engraving, laurel wreaths and the royal coat of arms. The blade is generally bright and in good condition, the etching remaining clear and legible, with some staining, particuarly towards the point.

Housed in its original Sam Brown Field Service scabbard. The suspension strap is a period replacement, and this itself has been repaired, which in turn has now failed.

It would demonsrate that this sword was used and carried, which may indicate a long and interesting career for the original owner. However, the pleasure of additional research I shall leave to the new owner.

A good untouched sword, fresh to the market, which will benefit from some attention. Edward VIII swords don't come onto the market with great frequency, especially attributable examples, so this represents a good opportunity to add a scarce variation to your collection.
