Here is a unique opportunity to acquire a George V 1897 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword which doesn't appear to have ever been used. It is housed in its original cardboard postage box.
It bears a postage label from Joseph Starkey of 16-18 Beak Street, Regents Street, London. They were Tailors and "Lacemen" who only used this particuar form of address in 1935. They were sending the sword to a branch of "Messrs Flights Ltd" of Catterick, who were also Military Tailors, who had shops in all the major military towns of the UK.
I can only surmise, given the year, that the sword was shipped from one Tailor to another to fufil an order from a newly commissioned officer. However, as George V died in 1935, perhaps the officer demanded to have a sword featuring the new King's cyppher of Edward VIII. Therefore, this sword would strictly speaking, be obsolete, so it was placed in storage and forgotten about!
Therefore we have a very close to mint, unused and uncarried example of an 1897 Pattern Infantry Sword. The sword is interesting in that it bears the makers marking of W.W. Greener of Birmingham, who are better known as Gunmakers, but who also diversified into swords and hunting knives.
The blade and hilt do have some very minor staining, but all in all the sword is in quite remarkable condition. The sword is fitted with its brown leather sword knot, and Sam Brown field service leather scabbard.
The box itself is in generally good condition, although it could do with being properly stored and conserved.
A likely unique find, and a museum quality exhibit for the advanced sword collector.
