The George V 1897 Pattern Infantry Sword of Lieutenant Colonel H.C. Hawkins. M.C. T.D.
Hervey Carleton Hawkins (variously listed in official documents as Harvey, and Henry!) was commissioned into the 6th (Glamorgan) Battalion Welch Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant on the 14th December 1913.
He was severley wounded in the neck by German machine gun fire, whilst leading the bombing party of the 6th Welch against the trench postion known as "Little Willie", part of the Hohenzollern Redoubt on the 30th of September 1915.
He was awarded the Military Cross, although I am yet to find the citation for the award, but presumably for the above action. He was also awarded the Territorial Decoration. He continued to serve with the 6th Welch, eventually commanding the battalion.
The sword with regulation 1897 pattern steel guard with crowned GV cypher, domed pommel with chequered backpiece. The shagreen grip is complete, although slightly grubby with some wear. It retains most of the original twistwire binding. Loss to the plating on the hilt, and lots of old grease and dirt/grime, particuarly to the interior.
The 32.5 inch single fullered blade with retailers markings at the ricasso of "Hobson&Sons. 1,3&5 Lexington St, London" who operated at this address as a military tailor/outfitter. It would appear to be produced by Pillin, judging by the "P" proof slug.
It bears the original owners details of "H.C.H." etched within a panel. Above this is a crown and "6th Batt Welsh Regt".
The blade further etched with foliate engraving, and crowned GVR cypher. The blade in very good condition, remaining mostly bright and clean. Service sharpened for the first 12 inches back from the point.
Housed in a leather field service scabbard. The original suspension strap absent, taking the stitching with it. Overall condition is good, with only minor scuffs. It would benefit from a clean, feed and polish.
A very good, untouched sword to a distinguished Officer of a Welsh battalion which had a very hard war. Worthy of further research, cleaning, and preservation.
