A rare ERI Edward VIII 1897 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword, for Indian Army Officers.
This example by Wilkinson Sword of Pall Mall, and carries thier "best proof" hexagonal proof slug.
This example was originally purchased by Captain A.T. Stephenson 18th Royal Garwhal Rifles. (Number 760.AI)
He served during WW2 and became an Italian Prisoner of War, although more research is needed into the circumstances surrounding his capture. He was initially held at Camp No 49, at Fontanellato. He escaped from this camp, circumstances unknown, but was later recaptured by the Germans and sent to Oflag O9A/Z at Spangenberg Castle.
This website gives some details about Fontanellato: CLICK HERE.
His POW report will be held at the National Archives, Kew.
Post war he seems to still be serving with the Indian Army, with the rank of Major and was awarded the Shaurya Chakra (SC) in 1952.
The regulation 1897 pattern guard guard with distinctive crowned ERI cypher, with domed pommel and chequered backpiece. The shagreen grip is complete, and retaining the original twistwire binding.
Initials "A.T.S." to the underside of the guard.
The 1892 pattern single fullered blade length with a length of 32.5 inches. This example with Wilkinson's makers details and proof slug to the ricasso. The blade is extremely well etched, and features vacant inscription panels, ERI royal cypher, alongside the tudor crown, and royal coat of arms, as well as the usual foliate engraving. The blade has some areas of staining. but is generally clean and bright.
Black leather field service scabbard with a plated steel drag. Black leather being correct for rifles regiments.
A good untouched sword, fresh to the market, which will benefit from some light cleaning. Edward VIII swords don't come onto the market with great frequency, and I have only encountered a couple of ERI variations over the last 30 years. Factoring in the bonus of an interesting owner this represents a scarce opportunity to add a seldom seen variation to your collection.
Sold with a digital copy of the Wilkinson proof ledger page for this sword.
