A particularly fine Victorian Patent Solid Hilt Presentation Sword by Robert Spring Garden, of Piccadilly.
I don't often get to use the word "masterpiece" but in terms of Victorian, over the top presentation swords, this one has pretty much got it all. Produced by Garden of Picadilly, better known for their robustly made swords and firearms for well heeled officers who wanted reliable weapons which they could trust with thier lives. They also held various supply contracts to Her Majesty's Government, and to the Honourable East India Company.
The sword is a patent solid hilt, the grips of chequered horn bound with silver twist wire. Full chequered back piece and pommel, with raised pommel finial in chequered brass. The regulation three bar hilt has had its outer bars chased with oak leaves.
The finely engraved, unfullered 35.5 inch blade marked at the ricasso "R.S GARDEN 29 PICCADILLY LONDON" and an etched proof star to the other, without slug.
The blade carries the rearing white horse of Kent with the motto "Invicta" to both sides. On the right hand side is inscribed within a series of banners 'To Captain Commandant Hall, 2nd Kent Artillery Volunteers, From the Officers and Men under his command, Feversham April 1862', as well as an elaborate coat of arms, which requires further research.
To the other side are the feathered lighting bolts of the Royal Artillery, a field gun, crowned, VR,
Both sides of the blade are lavishly engraved, with only the four inches towards the point of the blade being plain.
Housed in its original steel scabbard with twin hanging rings. This is now tarnished, but one can see in places how highly polished it would have been originally, and it wouldn't be too difficult to restore this finish, if desired.
A superbly made and impressive piece, which although not to everybody's taste is a remarkable survival in this condition, and worthy of furthe research into the background of its presentation.
