Royal Scots Fusiliers Special Pattern Officers Sword

Royal Scots Fusiliers Special Pattern Officers Sword

Code: 10742

SOLD

A very fine, and exceptionally rare Royal Scots Fusiliers special regimental pattern officers sword.

Marked at the ricasso with the retailers details "F.F. BOREMAN, 432 Strand, London".  Boreman operated from this address between 1848 and 1866, and given the features described below, I suspect this sword could well date to the Crimean period.

The hilt carries the distinctive flaming grenade badge bearing the regimental number "21" surmounted by thistles. The banners above and below read "Royal Scots Fusiliers" and the Latin motto "Nemo Me Impune Lacessit". The interior and exterior of the guard carries a good 75%+ of the original gilt wash. The folding guard operates well, and is still "snappy". It fits well when sheathed, another sign that the scabbard is original.

The pommel cap is also highly unusual, having a raised thistle design, of a type I have not encountered on this pattern previously. The shagreen grip is in good condition overall, with only minor loss. The grip is bound with silver twistwire. The guard does appear to have recieved a blow on the knuckleguard, and there is some distortion. However, the blade is still tight in the hilt, and is free from movement.

The blade is in exceptional condition, retaining its original Polish. There is a a spray of foliate etching above the retailers details. No proof slug, the opposite ricasso is also etched with foliate engraving and geometric patterning.

Regimental grenade badges with the regimets "21" numerals to both sides of the blade, as are oval cartouches to either side,  containing thistles, the outer boarder bearing the words "Royal Scots Fusiliers" and the Latin motto "Nemo Me Impune Lacessit".

Blade length 32 inches.

Housed in its brass scabbard, for officers of field rank or above. Some knocks, dings and distortion, but a perfect fit, not split, and the sword sheaths easily. Twin suspension rings.

Overall condition is very good indeed, you will struggle to find another as attractive as this example.
