A very good example, of a VRI 1895 hilted Infantry officers sword, by S.J. Pillin.
Septimus John Pillin was a sword cutler with premises at 31 Gerrard Street, Soho, London between 1881 and 1922. This Victorian example can only date between 1895 and 1897, due to the form of the hilt.
The hilt of regulation 1895 pattern, with crowned VRI cypher, domed pommel and chequered backpiece, the shagreen with twistwire grip in very good order.
The 32.5 inch blade of 1892 pattern. Pillin makers and proof slug markings to the ricasso. A particularly well etched blade, with foliate etching, VRI crowned cypher, the original owners interlocking initials (T.M.C. or a variation thereof) and bearing serial number to the spine.
A judicious search of the Indian Army lists for 1895/96 should yield the original owner.
Housed in its original brown leather field service scabbard, complete with Sam Browne frog. Solid overall condition, but with a very well executed later repair to the scabbards drag.
The scarcer variation of this short lived pattern, with a good possibility of researching the original owner.
