Victorian Army Chaplains Sword

Here is what I beleive to be a Victorian Army Chaplains Sword.

A first for me, as I had no idea that British Army Chaplain's carried swords. Infact, I suspect most didn't, but I am aware historically of some Chaplain's who carried side arms for personal protection. Therefore, akin to the RAMC officers sword, I am inclined to believe that this example may have been intended primarily for ceremonial use.

This example was retailed by "Pipe and McGill, Maiden Lane, Strand, London W.C" and is marked to them at the swords ricasso. They were Military Taylors and Outfitters, operating at Maiden Lane from 1882.

This example would appear to date to the late Victorian period, being equipped with the 1892 pattern blade, which would narrow its production from 1892 until 1901 and the death of Queen Victoria. The hilt of gothic 1822 pattern, in brass with the VR cypher. Good condition without any breaks or serious deformation, although it does appear to have been varnished. The lack of a chequered backstrap may further limit its production to date to pre 1895. The grip of shagreen bound in copper twistwire, the latter slightly loose in places. The blade and hilt are solid, with no movement.

The blade is a single fullered 1892 pattern, with Pipe&McGill's retailers details at the ricasso, and proof slug to the other. This with a "P" which may indicate that the sword was infact produced by Septimus John Pillin, of Soho.

The 33 inch blade is decorated with floral etching and crowned VR cypher to one side, and the crowned Army Chaplaincy Badge to the other. The blade generally bright, with some patches of dark staining and areas old stable pitting. It could be improved with care.

It is housed in a brown leather field service leather scabbard. Good overall condition, with some small areas of loss. It would benefit from a feed and polish.

This is certainly a rare, if not unique sword, being the only one I have ever seen, or can find extant currently. One for the specialist collector of Victorian British military swords.
