Victorian Berkshire Constabulary Sword

Code: 12046

SOLD

A very good example Victorian Police Sword, etched to the Berkshire Constabulary, circa 1840.

The brass stirrup guard and shagreen grip are in good condition, with no losses, and no sign that it ever carried any grip wire. Stepped pommel. No movement between blade and hilt. The guard is etched with the number "57" which is likely the rack number.

The straight blade of similar form to the Brunswick bayonet of the same period, measures just over 23 inches, culminating in a swollen spear point.

It is rather beautifully etched with a cartouche, containing a crown, surmounted by the words "Berkshire Constabulary" to the right hand side. The remaning area of the blade is plain. The blade is bright, with scattered areas of old pitting, mostly to the right hand side of the blade.

The hilt mounted safety catch is present, and working perfectly.

Sadly the original scabbard is absent.

Quite a scarce little sword, one of the earlier forms of police sword, and only the second I have seen etched to Berkshire.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched. Please send this at the time of ordering, to prevent unnecessary delay in your order being dispatched.
