A scarce Victorian Royal Navy Warrant Officer's Sword.
This pattern of sword are much harder to find than the officers version.
The guard of regulation gothic form, bronze with traces of the original gilt wash, bearing the crowned anchor within a cartouche. The domed pommel and reeded backstrap in place of the lionshead version found on the officers example. The folding guard complete and in good functioning order. The grip of shagreen bound with copper twistwire is also complete and in good order.
The 29 inch single fullered blade marked at the ricasso "Franckiess, Queen St, Portsea". John Franckiess of Portsea Outfitter and Tailor in Queen Street until . I would date this sword from the late 1880's to the early 1890's.
The blade decorated with foliate etching, andthe crowned Fouled anchor of the Royal Navy. The blade is generally clean and bright, with some areas of light staining, and scattered small patches old corrosion.
Scabbard absent. This sword would be worth tracking one down for.
Overall a very good and untouched example of this sought after sword with potential to improve with some gentle cleaning.
