A scarce all nickel Second Pattern Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife.
This is the early, first type of second pattern, similar to the first pattern, but with a straightened cross guard, and drop forged blade without ricasso. Around 40,000 of this type were produced.
This example is completely untouched, the grip is in good condition, with some wear to the pommel and cross guard.
The crossguard is marked with a broad arrow and "56" /| 56.
The blade has been service sharpened, and shortened during its working life, now measuring just over 6 inches.
Housed in the lower portion of a 2nd pattern sheath retaining its nickel chape, which has been modified/adapted, and is now fitted to a british army leather pliers frog, which is solid and works suprisingly well. Part of the original FS frog is visible, and you can see where it has become worn and failed, hence the adaptation.
An honest example of this sought after knife, which has obviously seen some front line service, this particular knife has not previously been in a collection, having come from the same source as the smatchet.
