A very scarce Regimental Pattern Kukri Of The 2nd Battalion, 8th Gurkha Rifles 

Great War period, battalion issue kukri are something of a specialist area, with very little of substance written on the subject. Most of what is known has been formulated over many years by dedicated collectors and researchers.

This is a very good, early 20th century military kukri, dating from circa 1900/WW1. This example is well maked above the kaudi with "2/8 GR, C Coy, 4812" the latter being a four digit soldiers (regimental) number to tbe blade. The latter may allow you to track down the original gurkha soldier to which it was issued. To know where, and by whom such a weapon was carried, is an incredibly rare opportunity.

The hardwood grip, which has single central grip ring with further three line band. The grip has the remains of a black paint finish, (along with some more modern dots of white emulsion!) which is consistant with other examples I've handled over the years, and was done to reduce glare/reflection. The rat tail tang is secured with a peen over the pommel plate, indicative of early 20thC military kukri. Small areas of loss to the grip at the pommel, no splits and solid, without any movement.

The blade with twin spine fullers in generally good bright condition, with areas of old grease towards the point, and signs of service sharpening and staining to the blade.

The black leather scabbard of military pattern, in solid condition. Still retaining its rear pouch with provision for chakmak and karda, although they are now absent, as is the steel chape, which has caused the start of a split.

The real bonus of this example, is that it retains is government issue frog, bearing its broad arrow, and date of 1900 to the interior. To the rear it carries regimental/battalion markings in a similar fashion to those found on the blade. This is a first in my experience, and quite exciting. Whilst not conclusive, it may well indicate that these kukri with such markings could be dated earlier than first thought. 

Blade length 13.5 inches, 17.75 inches overall.

A good untouched example, worthy of some gentle cleaning and care to preserve it. Extremely difficult to find, likely unique with an extant and matching frog.
