A very good example of the 1857 Pattern Royal Engineers Officers Sword.
The sword in good untouched condition, the hilt of 1857 Pattern for officers of the Royal Engineers. This in good condition, free from any deformation, some minor dings and scratches, and retaining good definition to the acanthus leaf decoration. Fully chequered pommel, the backpiece with chequered thumb rest. The grips bound in shagreen and copper twistwire with no loss.
No movement between blade and hilt.
The single fullered 32 inch blade with unusually long ricasso etched with a vacant shield where the makers/manufacturers details would normally be. The other ricasso does not contain a proof slug and is instead etched with an intricate floral burst.
The blade is very clean and bright, retaining a lot of its original polish, with some very light areas of light rust and grease/varnish. The blade decorated with foliate engraving and the feathered wings and lighting bolts of the Engineers, surmounted by a crown and the words "Royal Engineers". To the other side is the crowned VR Royal Cypher, and a well executed field gun. The blade has been lightly service sharpened towards the last twelve inches towards the point, and has some light contact marks to the cutting edge.
Housed in a steel scabbard with twin hanging rings. Good overall condition, with even patination and light rust, free from serious dings/dents.
A light clean of blade and scabbard and this will be a very good example of the pattern.
