A good Edward VIII 1897 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword.
Although this example doesn't carry any makers or retailers details at the ricasso, the hexagonal proof with its "HW" marked proof slug within would strongly indicate manufacture by Wilkinson Sword of Pall Mall. Likely one of many produced at speed for the coronation which never came to pass.
The regulation 1897 pattern guard guard with distinctive crowned ERVIII cypher, with domed pommel and chequered backpiece. The shagreen grip is complete, and retaining the twistwire binding. Some areas of loss to the plated finish.
The 1892 pattern single fullered blade length with a length of 32.5 inches.This example with vacant retailer's panel, and vacant inscription panels. As mentioned above I attribute the manufacture of this sword to Wilkinson, judging by the hexagonal proof slug and serial number to the spine. Alongside the crowned ERVIII cypher, the blade is well etched with foliate engraving.
The blade is generally bright and in good condition, the etching remaining clear and legible.
Housed in its original Sam Brown Field Service scabbard, and complete with a brown leather sword frog.
A good untouched sword, fresh to the market, which will benefit from some light cleaning. Edward VIII swords don't come onto the market with great frequency, so this represents a good opportunity to add a scarce variation to your collection.
