A good 1854 pattern Scots Guards Officers Sword.
This George V example was retailed by "W. Cater&Co Ltd, 56 Pall Mall S.W." The company was at this address using this business name between 1913 and 1917, so certainly a WW1 sword.
Likely the sword of Harold Victor Brill, who served firstly in Egypt & Gallipoli with the Berkshire Yeomanry where he participated in the Suvla Bay landings in August 1915. He was wounded on Burnt Hill during the yeomanry charge with a gun shot to his left arm on the 21st of August 1915. He was invalided to England from Mudros after quite a delay in November 1915.
In November 1916 he was discharged to commission into The Scots Guards as a probabtionary Lieutenant. He joined the 1st Battalion Scots Guards in January 1917, and was still serving with them as a Captain in October 1921. Plenty of research still to be done.
The gothic 1854 pattern Guards hilt, bearing the regimental badge of the Scots Guards. Shagreen grip is complete, the twistwire binding is largely complete, although a strand is now broken. Some loss to the plating to the hilt, particuarly towards the pommel.
The 32 inch blade which carries battle honours up to and including "South Africa 1899-1902" the crowned GV cypher, and the regimental badge. It also carries the original owners initials, " H. V. B." which opens an avenue for research. The blade is generally bright, and retains its original polish. Some minor staining, and corrosion on two areas of the blades spine.
Housed in its original field service leather scabbard with Sam Browne pattern frog. Some minor scuffs and would benefit from a feed and polish.
A good, untouched sword, never previously in a collection. It will benefit from some light cleaning to bring it up to a very good display standard.
