A good Great War period Grenadier Guards Officers Sword.

This example produced by Wilkinson Sword and can be dated to June 1917 via the proof number to the blades spine.

The gothic 1854 pattern Guards hilt, bearing the regimental badge of the Grenadier Guards. Shagreen grip is complete, although it has suffered some shrinkage to the outer edges, and the silver twistwire binding is complete. There is some loss to the plating to the hilt, particuarly towards the pommel.

The 32 inch blade which carries battle honours up to and including "South Africa 1899-1902" the crowned GVR cypher, and the the Flaming Grenade of the Grenadier Guards regimental badge. It also carries the original owners initials, "W.R." which opens an avenue for research. The blade is generally bright, and largely retains its polish, with some minor staining.

Serial number to the blades spine. Accompanied by a digital copy of the Wilkinson sword ledger, which states that the sword was sold to a Captain W. Rawle of the Grenadier Guards in July 1917.

Captain William Rawle served pre war with the South Wales Borders before joining the Grenadier Guards in May 1917. He appears in the London Gazette of March 1st 1918 as resigning his commission due to "Ill Health caused by wounds, and is granted the honoary rank of Captain" on the 5th of March 1918.

Housed in is original brown leather field service scabbard which is in largely good condition, although it has a period repair the scabbards mouth.

Good "as found" condition, in need of a gentle clean to the exterior, loss of plating to scabbard and guard.

A good researchable sword, to a sought after unit.
