East India Company Naval Officers Sword

SOLD

Code: 10084

Only the second example of one of these swords I have ever seen, and the first I have had the pleasure to own.

This example retailed by "Lonsdale&Tyler 26 Bedford St, Covent Garden, London" (who were in partnership from 1835 until 1845)

No proof slug to the blade, so I suspect this sword may be dated to circa 1845.

The blade has been serviced sharpened, and aside from minimal decorative etching at the ricasso, only carries the crowned initials "C.G." to either side of the blade.

These could be the original owners initials, or perhaps relate to the Coast Guard.

28.5 inch blade.

The 1827 pattern regulation naval hilt displays the fouled anchor surmounted by the East India Company lion. Large proportion of original gilt wash finish to the hilt, with its beautifully executed lions head pommel, the main terminating to the faceted backstrap.

The folding guard is present, and working, although the spring has lost its snap.

All rayskin grip covering is present, and in excellent all round condition, being bound with copper twistwire, which is also all present and correct.

Housed in its original black leather scabbard with brass mounts, which is solid and free from splits. Some minor dings and dents to the mounts, but otherwise very pleasing.

All in all a really superb example of this rare sword, and a gem for the EIC collector.
