An interesting and complete Military MBE group of five to Major Robert Thomas Mitchell McPhail, Royal Artillery.

It would appear that pre war McPhail was a student at Edinburgh University studying Mercantile Law, as evidenced by two large cased bronze prize medals named to McPhail.

McPhail must have joined up at the outbreak of war, as he is commissioned in September 1940.

The undermentioned Cadets, from 122nd, 123rd, 125th, & 133rd Officer Cadet Training Units, to be 2nd Lts. 24th Aug. 1940: — R.T.M. McPhail. London Gazette 3rd September 1940

He was promoted to War Substantive Captain (28/9/43) 

His MBE (Military) gazetted 1st January 1946 "Major (Temporary) Robert Thomas Mitchell McPhail (143033), Royal Regiment of Artillery."

Group consists of a cased Military MBE, 39-45 Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal and War Medals, the full size medals unmounted as issued, in box of issue with conveyance slip. Also a mounted group of corresponding miniature medals, and an unworn boxed wound badge. Also the two aforementioned Bronze university medals in their Morocco leather cases named to Robert T.M. McPhail.
