A good example of a Victorian Scottish Cross Hilt Officers Broadsword to the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Shagreen grip, wire binding absent. Pommel with celtic cross motif, secured by a large screw to facilitate the swapping of crossguard for full dress basket hilt.
The twin fullered ricasso marked "J.Nelson&Son, Bank Place, Kilmarnock". The blade twin fullered and etched with typical Scottish thistle and foliate engraving, with the regimental "1st V.B. Royal Scots Fusiliers with flaming grenade motif. Crowned VR Cypher to both sides of the blade, with a vacant escutcheon panel.
The blade has been service sharpened, and shows wear, old grease in the fullers, edge nicks, and signs of reprofiling at the point. It is possible the officer carrying this blade may have seen active service.
Housed in an all steel scabbard with correct ball finial, and twin suspension rings.
Blade length 32.5 inches.
Strictly over 18's only.
