A rather intriguing heavy cavalry troopers sword, of 1788 type, by Thomas Gill, possibly made for the Life Guards.
The guard carries a faint rack/troop number, which appears to be C over 18.
The straight, broad fullered blade with a narrow fuller bordering the spine over most of its length to either side, culminating in a hatchet point. On each side etched with crowned 'GR' monogram, a sprig of laurel above, a Garter star above 'Unparelled' below. Possibly the badge of the Life Guards. Blade length just under 35 inches.
The large steel basket-hilt possibly having been cut back. Large globular pommel. The spirally grooved wooden grip showing no signs of its original covering, and now with some play.
Gill is known to have made a quantity of Houshold cavalry swords in the 1780's, so it is quite possible this sword is one of that batch. Worthy of further research. More images available on request.
