Designed in 1935 by the sculptor Sir William Reid Dick in association with Helmets Ltd of Wheathampstead, the cork fire helmet replaced the older and more ornate brass examples. This example would appear to be one of the first 3000 ordered from Helmets Ltd, before production switched to tin helmets for the fire services for the duration of the war.
It is of cork construction, covered in a rubberised black fabric. The front of the helmet carries a Kings crown flanked by the letters "F.B".
The leather liner carries various markings to the interior, to include a broad arrow, contract numbers, and the original owners name "Ellis", as well as the "Helmets Ltd" makers marking and address.
A really nice and evocative example.
